Gardens for Small Country Houses Gertrude JekyllTruly wonderful large, thick and thorough vintage examination of British country gardens. Highly illustrated with excellent photos and plan drawings. Describes and examines several old British Gardens: a garden in Berkshire; Westbrook,Godalming; West Surrey, Highmount, Guildford; with additional chapters on hillside gardens, steps and stairways, ballustrades and walls, climbing and other plants on walls and houses, retaining walls and their plantings, hedges, water in the formal garden, methods of paving, the pergola, Gates and gateways, garden houses, statues and vases, sundials and seats, and rock gardens. Wonderful and unusual gift for the garden enthusiast. Impossible to find this latest edition. Overall a nice clean copy, with the following flaws: the top right corner shows a bit of early water damage with a small yellowish stain evident on the first 15 or so pages and old white bleach spots at top corner of the covers. Ditto from the back cover to the last 15 or so pages. No evident mildew or musty odor. The original review of the book from a period newspaper is glued to the inside front cover. Previous owners gift inscription on the flyleaf reads "to Elizabeth in memory of many lovely dreams of Gardens, Vera, December 29, 1935".
