The House of Your Dreams: How to Plan and Get It.

Kirkpatrick, W.A.

Published in 1958, this is an excellent do-it-yourself guide to buildiing your own small modern home. Lots of great photos (by Julius Shulman), diagrams, and text. It is a complete step-by-step guide to building or buying a home: financing, choosing a site, architect and contractors, interior design (room by room), heating, plumbing, insulating, lighting, color and more. While some of the advice is outdated, it is a fabulous and complete look at the California modern design sensibility with many hard-to-find examples. Written for the layman by W. A. Kirkpatrick, former professor of architecture at the University of Southern California and principal of Kirkpatrick and Gallion. Examples include: A. Quincy Jones personal residence Frederick Emmons personal residence (designer of Eichler homes), May residence (designed by Cliff May). The George Matsumoto House.
